Movement Practices

Contact Improvisation with Joey Lehrer

Contact Improvisation is a highly enjoyable dance form that involves the dynamic interplay of natural forces, such gravity & momentum, with the communicative ability of touch & contact.

Classes are open to all levels of experience and will include playful explorations of general embodiment through movement, dancing states for improvisation & fundamental Contact Improvisation skills.

Participants should expect to feel invigorated, yet relaxed, with an increased sense of body awareness and intergration.

October/November : Welcoming the Weight

The workshops follow a theme together, but each stands alone.

These workshops will explore the rich texture of support, freedom and communication that investing in weight gives our dance. We will deepen our ability to give, receive and distribute weight; as well as increase our sensitivity to the timing ‘sweet-spot’ of weight-exchange.

ABOUT ME

I will design and facilitate your movement sessions drawing on my experience and training in Laban Movement Analysis (LMA). LMA is a constantly evolving and vibrant framework of vocabulary, ideas and movement experiences that offer new understanding and perception of the moving body. It offers the individual awareness, access and choice within the full realm of movement possibility. It has developed over the last 80 years from the work of dance and movement revolutionary Rudolf Laban, as well as the physiotherapy work of Irmgard Bartenieff. LMA is used worldwide in a vast breath of fields including dance therapy, psychology, athlete training, dance, theatre and animation. My own movement practice also includes extensive training in Pilates, Yoga, Contact Improvisation, corporeal mime, voice, acting and classical dance and elements of these inform my teaching and what I can offer you.

Skinner Releasing Workshops

Skinner Releasing Technique (SRT) is a dance technique that facilitates a deep kinesthetic experience of movement. SRT utilises imagery to ease tensions and promote an effortless kind of moving, integrated with alignment of the whole body. Tactile exercises are used to give the imagery immediate kinesthetic effect. SRT smoothly integrates technical growth with creative process. Dancers, seasoned Releasers and people without formal dance training are welcome.

About Wendy Smith Wendy is currently Australia’s only qualified SRT teacher. She has studied with Joan Skinner in Seattle over many years and has been teaching this work for over 15 years.
