Structural integration
Structural Integration (SI) is a wholistic system of manual therapy, created by Dr Ida P. Rolf, that aims to create more harmonious structural relationships wihtin the body, especially with respect to the gravitational field. Thus, a body can better accept and works with gravity, rather than being in a constant fight against it, trying to overcome it. The SI process traditionally occurs through a series of ten sessions. This allows the time to work throughout and with the whole body for better balance – front-to-back, side-to-side, inner-to-outer. In brief: the early sessions open up the ‘sleeve’ of the body; the middle sessions give balance the ‘core’ of the body; the final sessions integrate these as well as other body relationships.
From the first session of SI, people often report a greater sense of ease, efficiency and co-ordination in their bodies. This continues as the work progresses – with the person’s structure finding more organisation, balance, span and tone, with respect to gravity. Compensatory and postural patterns can be unwound with more long-term results. Structural Integration can effect other areas of life, beyond just body, with people reporting mental calmness and clarity also associated with the SI process.
Who is this work for?
There are many people who will find benefit from this type of treatment:
Those struggling to find comfort in their daily body postures and movements
Those trying to resolve compensations from previous injuries;
Dancers or sportspeople wanting more ease in their movements and training
Those who are just generally looking for a little more from their bodies.
What a client says?
"There are so many ways that my experience of being in my body has been enhanced by the structural integration I underwent with Joey Lehrer. I didn’t come to him with any major complaints; just a desire to improve my posture and general mobility and stave off injury as I edge towards turning 40. My expectations were more than met. Firstly, I felt far more physically and emotionally grounded after each session. On a physically level, I literally found it easier to stand. I seemed to have a firmer grip on the ground and a better relationship with gravity. On an emotional level, I also felt steadier. Secondly, I learnt things about my body’s structure and different possible movement patterns through the methods Joey used. I have known for years that my posture was a little out of whack. However, I lacked a sense of how else I could stand or sit. Structural integration gave me a new sense of how my body could be aligned.
I was happy to put myself in Joey’s capable hands because of his significant experience as a movement practitioner and in massage therapy, in addition to structural integration. To be honest, I’m sad my 10 sessions are over." --- Shelley, Senior University Lecturer
